Christmas eve is tomorrow, and I am totally exhausted. As any of you professional cooks and bakers know, this is a helluva time for us at work, and for making impressive treats for our friends and families.
Today, I managed to almost cut off my fingertip when I was chopping red peppers, stopping about halfway through my nail bed... This is why we don't look up to see the other baker's hilarious facial expression when we chop, which I know darned well... I had to hide in shame while I dressed my wound, for fear of being taunted by the cooks for the reasons they say not to give bakers chef's knives...
I am really excited as to go spend some time with my family for the holiday and shower my lovable little niece with affection.
This is the first time I, (like many of you reading this I'm certain) have sat down since 6 a.m.for more than ten minutes, and it was time for a cotton-pickin' cocktail.
My brilliant friends and I had an "edible booze" night last week, and we made several alcoholic treats to enjoy for the holidays. The dangerous and beloved Apple pie drink was made, along with a nummy winter Sangria. I made whiskey soaked cherries, because they're awesome, easy, and look very festive bobbing around in a cocktail. They also make a great super easy homemade present, which my brother-in-law will be the lucky recipient of this year....
Whiskey Soaked Cherries
- 10 o.z. bottle of maraschino cherries
- 3/4 cup good quality whiskey ( I used Bushmills Irish Whiskey)
Directions: Empty a little over half of the liquid out of the cherries, and add the whiskey to the jar. Replace lid and gently shake to incorporate. Store in fridge, shaking daily to mix. Use for drink garnishes or dessert garnishes.
Sweet Irish Christmas Cocktail
-1 shot of Irish Whiskey
- 3 ice cubes
-4 o.z. cola
-1 t. grenadine
-1 whiskey soaked cherry
Directions: Combine all ingredients in a glass and stir to combine.
Tres yum.
Whiskey is one of the only liquors I really care for. Maybe it's because I'm almost half Irish..
Bushmill's is a really great whiskey, if you've only had something like Windsor at a high school kegger and you think you hate whiskey, you might want to try again with your grown-up taste buds.
These last a long time in the fridge, a few months at least, and from my understanding continue to get more booze laden as they sit.
It's time to sit back and relax, enjoy a cocktail or a nice meal with the people you love. That's exactly what I intend to do!
Happy Holidays from the Third Story Bake Shop!
you're welcome! They're delicious...
