I recently got a request for a very interesting groom's cake. It was a surprise from the bride, and she wanted to incorporate three of the groom's favorite things into the cake, and wanted it to be very "loud" colored. The three ideas she wanted incorporated were the "Ford" truck, International Harvester ( I had to look it up too, it's a grain company) logo since he was from a large dairy farm, and his favorite football team, the Green Bay Packers...
I made the IH symbol and the "Ford" symbol and the Green bay symbol out of Fondant, and they had to be applied right before serving due to the extreme heat wave.. The cake itself was alternating dark chocolate, vanilla and the top was marble, so every palate would be accounted for. The frosting was cream cheese tinted with my old standby Wilton brand food dye. I made all the fondant and dyed it, which is a pretty pointless thing to I decided after my arms felt like they were going to fall off trying to incorporate the black into the fondant for the IH symbol. It was a foot high, and 13 inches in diameter. It wasn't meant to overshadow the wedding cake, but like the lady wearing the two inch miniskirt at church, I hear this loud little cake stole the show. This was a fun little cake, and I'm bummed I couldn't have had a guest take a picture of the groom's face when his surprise cake got wheeled out! ( Or pictures of any guest's teeth who thought it was a good choice to eat the black fondant....)This little cake almost ended in tragedy when the A/C went out, and it was over a hundred degrees with humidity in my prep room. Then I burnt the livingeffingheck out of my hand on my desk lamp while aiming it at the cake to add some details, and had to take a brief cake breakdown moment, as every baker and cake mistress I know has had at least one of. There is a dark side to the often sunny and adorable aspects of baking, and it comes in the form of severe flesh burns and power outages, and blue dyed hands. All in the name of art I suppose.....
